U.S. Defence Chief Pete Hegseth sets new fitness standards
Summary
- Defense
Secretary Hegseth ended “politically correct” military
leadership. - Introduced
“gender-neutral” or “male-level” fitness standards. - Called
to stop “woke” culture in the armed forces.
According to Hegseth, the U.S. military has promoted too
many leaders wrongfully on the basis of gender quotas, color, and
“historic firsts.”
“The era of politically correct, overly sensitive
don’t-hurt-anyone’s-feelings leadership ends right now at every level,”
Hegseth said.
He claimed to be weakening safeguards against hazing and
relaxing disciplinary regulations. Hegseth advised military officials who
disagreed with his new strategy to “do the honorable thing and
resign.”
It wasn’t until Tuesday morning that Hegseth and U.S.
President Donald Trump made the sudden announcement that military commanders
from all around the world would be meeting at a Virginia facility.
Hegseth’s speech was mostly devoted to his own well-worn
talking lines, which depicted a military that has been constrained by
“woke” regulations.
“The military has been forced by foolish and reckless
politicians to focus on the wrong things,”
Hegseth said, before adding
that his speech “is about fixing decades of decay, some of it obvious,
some of it hidden.”
Hegseth used the forum to criticize
environmental regulations, transgender troops, and standards of physical
fitness and hygiene while highlighting his and Trump’s emphasis on “the
warrior ethos” and “peace through strength.”
He also proposed additional modifications, such as
“changes to the retention of adverse information on personnel records that
will allow leaders with forgivable, earnest or minor infractions to not be
encumbered by those infractions in perpetuity.”
With many of the generals and admirals stationed in over a
dozen countries, including conflict zones in the Middle East and elsewhere, the
meeting at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, close to Washington, had sparked
intense speculation about the reason and worth of bringing so many of them
together.
It is not unusual for senior military officials to meet with
civilian authorities. However, analysts claim that the gathering’s size, the
urgency with which it was called, and its mystery are all very unusual.
Hegseth, who has emphasized lethality and what he refers to
as the “warrior ethos,” has taken a number of odd and inexplicable
actions, such as ordering reductions in the number of general officers and
firing other top military leaders. The uncertainty came as the nation faces a
possible government shutdown this week.
Top Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell acknowledged the news of
the impromptu meeting on Thursday, but he would not provide any information.
He’ll
“be there if they want me, but why is that such a
big deal?”
the Republican president stated.
Trump will also give a speech at the event, a White House
official announced on Sunday. As reported by NBC News, the president and
Hegseth will be “talking about how well we’re doing militarily, talking
about being in great shape, talking about a lot of good, positive things.”
According to Vice-President JD Vance, it was “not
particularly unusual that generals who report to” Hegseth are coming to
speak with him, and the media had made it into a “big story” last
week.
What are the specific proposed physical fitness standards
and tests?
Hegseth’s order implies that the military will adopt a
standardized set of individual tests typically associated with some of the
higher, traditional male-focused standards with the gendered additional scoring
taken away. These physical fitness tests would appear to require members to be
able to do a set number of repetitions or achieve a certain time or distance in
these basic physical fitness tests.
The focus will now switch away from differing gender-based
standards to one standard for everyone in terms of on score receiving based
qualifications vs something else. This would constitute a systemic increase in
physical fitness across every level of the force.
Additional information will be developed by the military
services in future publications like official manuals and guides to test
implementation in 2026.
