At a time when other well-known Republicans, such as former
Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley and U.S. Representative Mike Collins, are
becoming more and more likely to enter the race, King made his announcement on
social media.
“I got into the U.S. Senate race to beat Jon Ossoff, not
distract from the mission,”
King said in a statement.
“Right now it’s
clear there’s little path forward to the nomination, so today I’m suspending my
campaign.”
King recently revealed
that he had raised $518,000 to support his campaign, which was less than the
$3.5 million raised by Republican Congressman Buddy Carter. In contrast, Ossoff
said that it raised almost $41 million in the most recent quarter.
When King was first appointed to the position in 2019,
Governor Brian Kemp hailed him as the first Hispanic constitutional official to
hold a statewide office. He defeated a Trump-endorsed candidate in the GOP
primary and was elected to office in 2022.
“I’m going to do everything I can to keep Georgia’s state
offices red and back a Senate nominee who supports President Trump’s agenda,”
King
said in the statement exiting the Senate race.
In May, King began his Senate campaign. The only Democratic
senator running for reelection in a state that President Donald Trump won in
2024 is Ossoff, who won the seat in 2020. In Georgia last year, Trump defeated
former Vice President Kamala Harris by almost 115,000 votes.
According to reports, party leaders—especially Kemp and
Trump—have been secretly searching for a candidate who can bring the fractured
Republican party together. As of yet, no contender has come out of those
discussions publicly.

Georgia?
John King decided to suspend his 2026 U.S. Senate campaign
in Georgia because he did not see a viable path to winning the Republican nomination.
He acknowledged the difficulty after Governor Brian Kemp endorsed Derek Dooley
as the preferred GOP candidate, and there was consolidation of support behind
Dooley among other Republican contenders as well. King also faced challenges
with fundraising and gaining voter traction.
Consequently, King chose to withdraw and seek reelection as
Georgia’s Insurance Commissioner instead.
King had launched his Senate campaign in May 2025 after
notable Republicans like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Governor Kemp decided not
to run.
