Washington (The Washington Insider Magazine) February 4,
2026 – More than 50 Democratic candidates with medical or scientific
backgrounds have entered 2026 congressional and statewide races, spurred by
Robert F Kennedy Jr’s role as HHS Secretary. Groups like 314 Action report
heightened recruitment following Kennedy’s confirmation and vaccine policy
shifts. Physician candidates cite patient concerns over healthcare access,
costs, and evidence-based leadership in competitive districts.
Dr Richard Pan, a paediatrician and former California state
senator, announced his candidacy for California’s 6th Congressional District on
5 November 2025. Pan shifted from the 3rd District after redistricting via
Proposition 50, targeting areas from north Sacramento to Roseville and Rocklin,
currently held by Rep Ami Bera. He stated his campaign focuses on protecting
families, expanding healthcare access, and addressing uninsured rates among
children.
Pan referenced past conflicts with Kennedy over vaccine
legislation, including a 2019 incident where blood was thrown at him during
assembly proceedings.
Democratic Doctors Cite RFK Jr as Key Motivation for
Candidacies
314 Action executive director Erik Polyak stated on 30
November 2025: “RFK Jr is our greatest recruitment tool for doctors.” The group
reported over 50 candidates with medical backgrounds running for Congress or
statewide offices, with at least six in competitive seats.
Bloomberg Government coverage noted Democrats recruiting
doctors and nurses for counter-messaging against Kennedy. Polyak added:
“With
health care on the line for millions of Americans—2026 will be the health care
election, and Democratic doctors and scientists are ready to lead.”
The Atlantic reported on 7 November 2025 that candidates
include a mathematician, microbiologist, several paediatricians, and former
health officials entering competitive races. Many launched campaigns
post-Kennedy’s confirmation, citing assaults on science and expertise voids.

Specific Candidates with Scientific and Medical
Credentials Emerge
Dr Nirav Shah, former Maine CDC director, joined the
Democratic gubernatorial race on 20 October 2025. Shah, who led Maine’s COVID
response, prioritises housing, food insecurity, healthcare access, and economic
development. He lives in Brunswick and holds statewide recognition.
Shah joins competitors including Secretary of State Shenna
Bellows, former House Speaker Hannah Pingree, and former Senate President Troy
Jackson. Shah said:
“Maine is at a crossroads, and we need a governor with
proven leadership experience who is ready to tackle our challenges on day one.”
Dr Mai Khanh Tran, a California paediatrician endorsed by
314 Action, is running partly due to threats to Obamacare affecting patients.
Dr Kathie Allen, a Utah family doctor, received similar backing.
Nevada Democratic Congresswoman Jacky Rosen, a computer
programmer and software developer, holds 314 Action Senate endorsement.
Incumbent Physicians Oppose Kennedy’s HHS Nomination
US Representative Dr Kelly Morrison (MN-03), an OBGYN,
joined five fellow Democratic doctors on 11 February 2025 to urge Senate
opposition to Kennedy’s HHS nomination. Participants included Rep Maxine Dexter
MD (OR-03), Rep Ami Bera MD (CA-06), Rep Raul Ruiz MD (CA-25), Rep Kim Schrier
MD (WA-08), and Rep Herb Conaway MD (NJ-03).
Morrison stated: “As an OBGYN, I implore my colleagues in
the Senate to not betray the women of this country, to not threaten their basic
health care, and to oppose the nomination of RFK Jr.”
A 6 February 2025 press conference by Democratic House
doctors addressed nomination concerns, following a 3 February statement. Rep
Raul Ruiz MD hosted the event.
Broader Recruitment Efforts by Pro-Science Groups
314 Action, focused on electing Democrats with science or
medicine backgrounds, reported 150+ doctors inquiring about 2026 runs across 35
states. The group backs over 100 at state and local levels and fields
House/Senate challengers.
Past successes include flipping the House in 2018 and Senate
in 2021. Current efforts target red-to-blue flips.
Wall Street Journal reported on 10 January 2026 that
physician candidates also address patient worries on healthcare costs and
coverage.

Public Health Community Voices Warnings on Kennedy Policies
Over 700 public health professionals, scientists, and
activists signed a Defend Public Health letter on 13 January 2025 opposing
Kennedy’s confirmation. Signatories from Harvard, Yale, and Emory cited his
“fringe beliefs” and inexperience threatening infectious disease
efforts.
A prior letter from 15,000 physicians, via Democratic
Committee to Health Care, echoed rejection calls. Kennedy met senators amid
campaigns by Protect Our Care and 314 Action ads.

Historical Context of Science Candidates in Politics
314 Action has supported
500+ candidates since 2017, increasing scientists in office to record levels.
Efforts span Senate to school boards, with data-driven voter outreach.
Physics Today noted on 12 October 2025 media and 314 Action
drawing attention to STEM-linked hopefuls.
Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine applauded
Kennedy on 28 December 2025 for reducing animal experiments but proposed 2026
priorities.
These developments reflect organised pushes by medical
professionals into 2026 elections across congressional districts and state
races.
