Summary

  • China strongly rejects the U.S. report calling it a "China threat."
  • The report promotes outdated Cold War ideas and aims to limit China.
  • China follows a peaceful foreign policy and does not seek power struggles.
  • China urges the U.S. to stop attacks and view relations fairly.
  • Both countries should work toward a stable, healthy relationship.

In response to a question regarding the report in which Democratic members of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee called for congressional action toward restoring the nation's global reputation and influence to prevent the U.S. from being overtaken by China as the world's leading power, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made the comments during a routine press briefing.

According to Lin, the study, which is replete with Cold War ideologies, promotes major-nation conflict and the mythical "China threat," with the ultimate goal of targeting and repressing China. China is adamantly against it.

He emphasized that China has no plans to interfere and always operates as a stable and constructive force for good, adhering to an independent foreign policy of peace.

Lin urged relevant U.S. personnel to cultivate a positive perception of China, view China and China-U.S. relations objectively and rationally, refrain from attacking, smearing, containing, and going after China, and contribute to a stable, sound, and sustainable bilateral relationship.

Lin noted that China views and handles its relations with the U.S. according to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.

Why does China strongly oppose the U.S. report on the "China threat"?

China strongly opposes the U.S. report on the so-called "China threat" because it believes the report misinterprets and distorts China’s national defense policies and military intentions, promoting a false narrative aimed at smearing and suppressing China’s peaceful development and rise.

Chinese officials assert that the U.S. report exaggerates China’s military modernization and strategic goals, particularly on sensitive issues like Taiwan, and accuses the U.S. of fueling tensions and undermining regional peace and stability through such rhetoric.

The report is seen as a tool to hyping up the “China threat” theory without factual basis, misrepresenting China’s defense expenditure, nuclear policy, and military strategies.

China accuses the U.S. of having a long history as a “troublemaker” and violator of peace and order, citing past military interventions, and thus finds the accusations hypocritical.
