Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian vehicles in the Ein Yabroud village, east
of Ramallah, in the central West Bank. Residents said the settlers blocked the
road and assaulted vehicles while Israeli forces were present. The Palestinian
news agency Wafa reported that no one was injured in the attack.
What is behind Israel’s Jericho Closure and the West Bank
violence?
In a separate development, the Israeli army closed all 4
entrances to the city of Jericho in the eastern West Bank. The closure led to
heavy traffic. Some drivers tried to use other roads as alternate routes, but
settlers were present on several of these roads.
A total of 916 permanent and temporary Israeli checkpoints
now block towns and cities across the occupied West Bank. Among them, more than
243 iron gates have been installed since the start of Israel’s military
campaign in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, which has continued for 2
years.
The checkpoints and gates force many Palestinians to
use several types of transportation to travel between villages and cities.
The restrictions disrupt daily life, make access to schools, workplaces, and
hospitals difficult, and add to the challenges of living under occupation.
Palestinian human rights groups report that Israeli forces
and illegal settlers have killed at least 1,097 Palestinians in the occupied
West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since October 2023. Nearly 11,000 others
have been injured, and around 21,000 people have been detained during the same
period.
The International Court of Justice issued its ruling
regarding the occupation of Palestinian territory by Israel as illegal under
international law in a landmark opinion issued in July. The court defined that
all settlements located in the West Bank and East Jerusalem must be evacuated.
This ruling emphasises that the expansion of settlements by Israel contravenes
international law and that there is a requirement for both accountability and
action.
