Ex-MLB star Mark Teixeira launches congressional bid to back Trump
Summary
- Mark
Teixeira, former MLB star, running for Congress in Texas. - Campaign
announced for Texas’ 21st Congressional District seat. - Supports
President Trump’s America First agenda and conservative values. - Focuses
on border security, government spending cuts, and liberty.
Just one week after Republican Chip Roy, the district’s
current congressman, said he would not run for reelection, Teixeira entered the
contest. Roy will instead run to become the Attorney General of Texas.
Roy had served as the representative for Texas’ 21st
district since 2018, winning three separate re-election campaigns since then
(2020, 2022, 2024), all by sizable margins.
Despite having little prior political experience, Teixeira
wants to fill the hole left by Roy.
Teixeira stated unequivocally that conservative policies
will be the focus of his campaign. Teixeira was described in the announcement as
a “lifelong conservative who loves our country.”
Teixeira’s choice to run for Congress, it added, is an
attempt to follow “his passion for public service and the America First
agenda.”
Although Teixeira has never held a public office, he claims
in his statement that since leaving baseball, he has “championed”
numerous conservative issues. He has helped
with the Texas Public Policy Foundation and has been an outspoken advocate for
Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
The general election, set for November 3, 2026, is still
more than a year away. March 3, 2026 is the date of the primary, while May 26,
2026 is the date of the primary runoff. Filing must be done by December 8,
2025.
Three Democrats, one Independent, and none of the
Republicans—aside from Teixeira—have currently registered with a federal or
state campaign finance organization and are listed among the candidates by
government election agencies:
- 14-year
career - 1,862
regular-season games - 409
career home runs - Five
Gold Glove awards - Three-time
All-Star
How has Teixeira framed his support for Trump’s America
First agenda?
Emphasizing teamwork and a fighting spirit, saying he is
“ready to help defend President Trump’s America First agenda, Texas
families, and individual liberty.” Highlighting his identity as a proud
Texan and lifelong conservative who loves the country and wants to fight for
principles that make Texas strong and America exceptional.
Expressing a focus on securing the border, promoting limited
government, and opposing what he calls “radical woke indoctrination.”
Pledging to stand up for everyday heroes such as police officers, firefighters,
farmers, ranchers, teachers, parents, and hardworking taxpayers.
Building on his competitive edge from his MLB career, he
promises to bring grit, preparation, and a winning mentality to Congress in
support of conservative policies.
